Not every calculation belongs to a formal discipline. Fuel costs, electricity bills, unit pricing at the supermarket, wind chill on a cold morning and password strength are all everyday decisions with a clean mathematical answer underneath.
The common structure is a rate applied to a quantity: cents per kilowatt-hour times hours used, dollars per gallon divided by miles per gallon, price divided by unit size. Once the rate is explicit, comparison becomes trivial.
Energy and vehicle tools are the most consequential of the group because they recur monthly. Small persistent inefficiencies — an appliance left running, a fuel economy gap of a few miles per gallon — compound into meaningful annual sums.
Weather tools translate raw readings into perceived conditions. Wind chill and heat index combine temperature with wind speed or humidity to describe what the body actually experiences, which is what safety guidance is written against.
Each tool states its assumptions, because everyday calculations are especially sensitive to local rates: electricity tariffs, fuel prices and tax treatment vary by region and change over time.

Key concepts in everyday & utility calculators
- Unit rate
- Cost per standard unit — per litre, per kilowatt-hour, per ounce — the basis of any fair comparison.
- Kilowatt-hour
- One kilowatt of power drawn for one hour; the billing unit for electricity.
- Fuel economy
- Distance travelled per unit of fuel, expressed as MPG or L/100km.
- Wind chill
- The perceived temperature produced by combining air temperature with wind speed.
- Heat index
- Apparent temperature from combining air temperature with relative humidity.
- Entropy
- A measure of unpredictability in bits, used to quantify password strength.
How this topic works
Comparing prices honestly
Package sizes are deliberately non-comparable. Reducing every option to a unit price — per 100g, per litre, per count — removes the packaging effect and often reverses the apparent bargain. Bulk is not automatically cheaper, and multi-buy offers frequently price above the base unit rate once the promotional price is divided out.
Where household energy actually goes
Cost equals power (kW) × hours × tariff. Heating, cooling, water heating and refrigeration dominate because they run for long periods, not because their instantaneous draw is high. A 2kW heater for four hours a day at $0.30/kWh costs about $72 a month; a 5W standby device running continuously costs under $1.50.
Fuel cost per mile
Cost per mile is fuel price divided by fuel economy. At $3.50 a gallon and 30 MPG that is about 11.7 cents per mile, so a 12,000-mile year costs roughly $1,400 in fuel alone. Comparing vehicles on cost per mile rather than MPG makes the financial gap between options obvious.
Perceived temperature and safety
Wind chill applies below about 10°C with wind above 4.8 km/h; heat index applies above about 27°C with meaningful humidity. Both exist because the body loses or retains heat differently depending on air movement and moisture, and exposure guidance is written against the perceived value rather than the thermometer reading.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my electricity cost for one appliance?
Multiply the appliance's power in kilowatts by hours used, then by your tariff per kWh. A 1.5kW appliance for 2 hours at $0.25/kWh costs $0.75.
Is buying in bulk always cheaper?
No. Comparing unit price frequently shows a smaller package priced lower per unit, particularly when promotions apply to the smaller size.
What is the difference between MPG and L/100km?
MPG measures distance per fuel unit — higher is better. L/100km measures fuel per distance — lower is better. They are reciprocal measures of the same thing.
When does wind chill apply?
Wind chill is meaningful at air temperatures around 10°C or below combined with wind above roughly 5 km/h; it does not apply in warm conditions.
What makes a password strong?
Length and unpredictability. Entropy in bits grows with both character set size and length, and length contributes more per character than symbol complexity does.
